Over 140 riders entered the second long distance trial run by the Bemrose Trials Club, (better known for running the Bemrose Trophy Trial). Thankfully the weather was much kinder this year after the atrocious conditions in the first event last year.
Starting in the Wildboarclough area near Macclesfield, the riders followed a 69-mile scenic route around the Buxton area, taking in Tideswell and Millers Dale.
All but one of the 30 sections had both a harder and easier route, the remaining section being quite a tough harder route only section, (Section 29), a long steep uphill rocky steam, often used for local club trials and always known for taking marks. So a very well done to all those riders who managed to even get up it on a trail bike. This section saw only one clean score by Richard Du Feu, riding a 300 Gas Gas enduro bike.
On the Harder Route A class, the winner of the Peaky Boulders Trophy was Toby Fry (KTM Freeride), on 3 marks. It was a close win on furthest clean as Toby didn’t lose any marks until section 29, whereas both Ray Samways, (275 Sherco X ride), who won last year, and Dave West, (300 Husqvarna), who both also lost 3 marks, had taken a dab each on section 5 and a 2 on section 29.
In a very creditable 4th place on 5 marks was Andy Hipwell (Yamaha Serrow), riding perhaps not the most competitive bike of the day, but it was his late dad’s machine and rides it in his memory.
In Class B, Harder Route over aged 60, Kev Stannard, (237 Pampera), came out on top for the second year dropping 9 marks, beating Dave Renham (Pampera) on most cleans.
Harder Route Class C, for riders on trials bikes, was topped by Stuart Woodfield (Montesa 4 Ride) on 6 marks lost.
On the Easier Route Class D, for riders on trail bikes, Michael Ellis, (300 Beta), topped the list losing 3 marks, Ian Wixon, (Honda XR) 8 marks.
Class E, for riders on trials bikes was topped by Chris Bown, (250 Scorpa), on 1 mark, followed by brother Roger Bown, (Scorpa SY), on 5 marks lost.
Finally, Class F, for riders on classic twin shock trials bikes was won by John Winstanley, (Ariel HT), losing a very credible zero marks.
Although not featuring in the top scores in the twin shock class, rider Matthew Bibby deserves a mention as being the only rider to follow the old school tradition of riding his bike a whole 70 miles to the event from Shropshire and then back again. Over 200 miles and 30 sections on an original BSA C15. Must be worth an award for the effort.
So a good day was had by all followed by a fish and chip supper at the end. Next year’s event is planned to follow a completely new route in the Winster area near Matlock.
